Who runs this site
Can I Expat There? is run by Barış Kara, a sole trader based in Türkiye. He is the data controller for anything this site collects. Contact:[email protected].
What we collect
- City Finder preferences. The quiz uses broad choices such as budget band, climate, priorities, lifestyle tags, and region. These preferences can be encoded into a report link, but your email address is never included in that link.
- Report email requests. If you ask us to email your personalized report, we receive the email address you type plus the normalized City Finder preferences needed to rebuild the report. We do not create an account or save a dashboard in this release.
- Optional relocation tips consent. The tips checkbox is separate from the report request and is unchecked by default. You can request the report without opting in.
- First-party analytics. The site defines a fixed list of coarse events such as pageviews, report CTA views, and city/comparison clicks, and can post them to its own endpoint. No third-party analytics provider is connected in this release, and the endpoint validates and discards events without storing or forwarding them. Analytics payloads do not include email addresses or raw free-text answers.
- Community ratings and costs. If you rate a city or submit a cost, the site stores a random device id and your own submitted values in your browser's local storage. Clearing this site's browser data removes that local copy.
Community contributions
Ratings and cost submissions are stored with hashed forms of the device id, IP address, and browser string. These hashes help keep one person from voting many times and help catch abuse. They are not used to identify you or build a profile.
You can withdraw a rating from the same widget. Withdrawal removes that rating from the public average immediately. It does not delete the row: the status changes to withdrawn, and the hashed identifiers stay so a vote-withdraw-vote loop cannot bypass the one-vote-per-device rule.
What we do not do
- No selling or renting personal data.
- No pre-checked marketing consent.
- No email addresses in analytics events, report URLs, or public pages.
- No accounts, saved reports, subscriber database, CRM sync, or PDF generation in the current release.
Email delivery
The report email system is provider-agnostic. If a production email provider is configured, it may process the address solely to deliver the requested report. In local or unconfigured environments, the site generates the hosted report link and clearly says email delivery is not configured.
Deleting your data
Because this release does not add accounts or a persistent subscriber database, there may be nothing stored after a report request unless a production email provider is later connected. If you need help with a report request or want provider-side data removed, email [email protected].
Data quality
Reports are deterministic summaries from the current city data, not legal, tax, medical, immigration, or financial advice.
