Sun, bubble tea, and Taiwan's most livable city
Taichung is Taiwan's second city — warmer and sunnier than Taipei with lower costs, excellent food, and a growing arts scene. The National Taichung Theater, night markets, and proximity to Sun Moon Lake make it a well-rounded base.
Go: affordable, sunny, great food, fast internet, and friendlier English environment than most Asian cities.
Strong on internet (4.5/5), but weaker on english friendly (3.1/5).
Our estimate: $1,750/month. Biggest line items: Rent $765, Food $350, Entertainment $210.
Relocation readiness

Taichung scores strongly for internet, but you should still prepare mobile data and backup access for arrival.
Use a short initial stay so you can test neighborhoods, commute patterns, noise, and work setup before choosing longer-term housing.
Check card access, cash needs, and backup payment options before departure.
Get reliable connectivity working before you rely on maps, messaging, bookings, or work calls.
Plan your first trips carefully and check whether you will need ride-hailing, taxis, or other transport for errands.
Save local emergency numbers and nearby clinic or hospital options in advance.
Test your internet, workspace comfort, and backup options before scheduling important calls.
Before extending your stay, compare longer-term housing options and confirm any local registration, tax, or residency steps that may apply.
